KraftMaid Home Additions & ADU: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
Adding square footage with KraftMaid cabinetry and finishes in Ventura typically runs $45,000 to $130,000 for a full home addition, and $90,000 to $220,000 for a standalone ADU. We install KraftMaid-compatible additions and ADU packages throughout Ventura, and we carry the trim, hinge, drawer-guide, and panel components that keep existing KraftMaid installations looking right after walls move or rooms get repurposed. Most Ventura homeowners call us because a previous addition left them with mismatched cabinet runs, doors that no longer align after the house settled, or a KraftMaid layout that was never configured for the way the family actually uses the room.
The most common trigger is a hinge or drawer slide that finally gives out after years of salt air and daily use, right when the owner is already thinking about changing the room. That’s the moment to get the part matched and the bigger question answered: patch the existing setup or design the addition around the cabinets you already own. We do both. Elmstead Remodeling Ventura is an independent remodeling contractor and is not affiliated with KraftMaid.
Which KraftMaid Models This Applies To

KraftMaid builds across several cabinet lines, and the part numbers change by door style, overlay, and year. When a Ventura owner brings us a failed hinge or a drawer guide, the first thing we check is whether the cabinet is a standard overlay or full overlay door. Standard overlay doors sit proud of the face frame by about half an inch, while full overlay doors cover nearly the entire frame. The hinge cup and mounting plate are different between the two, and mixing them leaves a door that binds or gaps at the corner. The second check is the interior sticker: KraftMaid marks most cabinet boxes with a manufacturing code, and that code is what we use to order the matching hinge, slide, or touch-latch rather than guessing at the hardware aisle.
For additions and ADUs, the compatibility question is less about the part and more about the run. KraftMaid base cabinets in Ventura homes built after the mid-2000s are usually 24 inches deep, but older kitchen layouts and garage-conversion ADUs sometimes have 21-inch cabinets. That three-inch difference matters when we are matching an island to an existing wall run or adding a pantry tower beside a bank of drawers. We measure before we order, and we write the cabinet list with the customer. No aftermarket substitutions get made without a conversation first.

Signs Your KraftMaid Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Doors no longer close square. Ventura’s coastal humidity swells wood and MDF cores over time. A door that hangs a quarter-inch low at the outer corner is usually a worn hinge or a shifted face frame, not a warped door. Replacement hinges with the correct overlay often fix the alignment without touching the cabinet box.
. - Drawer slides feel gritty or stick halfway. Salt air works its way into the ball bearings in the slide tracks, and once the grease dries, the drawer starts to drag. The fix is a new pair of full-extension slides; the old ones are not worth cleaning and re-lubricating.
- Soft-close no longer soft-closes. The damper inside a KraftMaid soft-close hinge is a small hydraulic cartridge. When it leaks, the door slams. You’ll notice one door in a bank closes differently from the others. That’s a hinge replacement, not a cabinet replacement.
- Trim and filler pieces have split or pulled away. In additions and ADUs, walls move more than they do in the original structure. The filler strips and crown trim KraftMaid ships get brittle in the sun and crack when the framing settles. We replace the filler rather than forcing the cabinet back against a wall it no longer matches.
- You’re planning an addition and the existing KraftMaid layout doesn’t match the new room. This is the one most Ventura families miss. Adding a wall or bump-out changes the run length, and suddenly the old cabinet bank ends three inches short of the new wall. Matching the existing door style and finish is a part-matching job as much as a framing job.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

When the project is a home addition in Ventura, the $45,000 to $130,000 range covers framing, roofing, drywall, electrical, permits, and the KraftMaid cabinet package installed. An ADU runs $90,000 to $220,000 depending on whether it’s a garage conversion, a detached unit, and how much of the finishing is cabinetry versus simple shelving. A smaller scope, like matching trim, refacing a cabinet run, or swapping failed hinges and slides, usually lands in the $400 to $1,800 range for hardware and labor, depending on the number of doors and drawers involved.
Every estimate is written, and the price is set before a single drop cloth goes down. That includes the cabinet list, the hardware list, and the labor. If something changes on the job, we talk about it before it changes the number. Shoe covers, floor protection, and a photo of the clean-up are included on every visit. And the 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if the work isn’t done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Cabinet hardware replacement is one of the few areas where a careful owner can do good work. Replacing a standard hinge or a drawer slide on a KraftMaid cabinet is a screwdriver-level job, provided you have the exact hinge with the same overlay and the same screw pattern. The danger is never about electricity or tension here; it’s about ordering the wrong part and drilling new holes that leave the door crooked and the cabinet face scarred. Once a face frame gets an extra set of screw holes, hiding the mistake gets harder than paying for the right hinge the first time.
Anything involving wall removal, structural headers, electrical runs, or moving drains is firmly in the “call us” category, especially in Ventura where seismic codes and coastal wind standards apply to every addition and ADU. Graham Stein has been reading structural plans since his days in the building technology program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and the crew has rebuilt enough Ventura kitchens and bump-outs to know when a wall is load-bearing before the first board moves. If you’re not sure whether the part or the wall is the problem, call (341) 218-4316 and we’ll tell you over the phone.
FAQs

In Ventura’s coastal air, factory KraftMaid hinges and slides typically last 8 to 15 years before the salt exposure begins to wear the finish and dry out the dampers. Homes further inland, like parts of east Ventura, often get a few more years. Soft-close dampers usually fail before the hinge itself does.

Replace the hardware. A soft-close damper that’s leaked, a slide with pitted bearings, or a hinge with a bent knuckle cannot be rebuilt to the same smoothness, and the time spent trying costs more than a new part. For cabinet boxes themselves, small face-frame splits and loose corner blocks are often repairable in place without removing the cabinet.
Call (341) 218-4316 for an exact quote. We’ll tell you upfront whether it’s a part swap or a bigger fix.
A typical hinge-and-slide replacement across a kitchen or ADU takes one day for a two-person crew, including removing the old hardware, mounting the new parts, and aligning every door and drawer. Matching trim and filler for an addition can add a second day if pieces need to be cut and finished to match the existing color. Full additions and ADUs run on their own schedules, which we write into the scope of work before anything starts.

We carry the most common standard overlay and full overlay hinges, full-extension drawer slides, touch latches, and mounting plates for KraftMaid-style cabinets on our trucks, and we can match most other hardware from our Ventura suppliers within a day or two. For cabinet boxes, doors, and trim pieces, we order the specific KraftMaid SKU from the cabinet list so the color and door style match the existing run. We also work with Cambria, Silestone, and Kohler finishes when the project moves beyond cabinetry into countertops and fixtures.
Call (341) 218-4316 and we’ll check the truck while you’re on the phone.
