Kohler Driveway & Pavers: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

Kohler driveway and paver work in Ventura typically runs $7,000 to $18,000 installed for a standard paver driveway, with most jobs completed in 5 to 10 working days depending on access and underlying soil. We stock Kohler-compatible paver and driveway materials and can match existing Kohler paver lines when a section has failed rather than the whole run. Most Ventura homeowners discover the problem the same way: a paver shifts underfoot after winter rain, a corner cracks where the driveway meets the curb, or a low spot forms where water pools instead of draining toward the street.

What separates a Kohler paver failure from a generic one is usually the base, not the paver itself. In Ventura’s clay-heavy soil, water expands and contracts through the seasons. If the base was compacted in a hurry or drainage wasn’t cut properly, the pavers telegraph that movement within a few seasons. The paver may be fine. It’s what’s under it that gave way.

Which Kohler Models This Applies To

Kohler’s exterior paver and driveway lines run in three broad families: the modular rectilinear pavers used for driveways and walkways, the larger-format slab pavers for patios and aprons, and the permeable paver system designed for stormwater absorption. Within each family, sizes and thicknesses differ enough that a paver from one line will not always sit flush against a paver from another, even when the color looks close. We’ve seen this happen in the Midtown district: a homeowner bought a handful of replacement pavers by color alone and discovered the new pieces were 8 mm thinner than the original bed. The fix cost more than matching the part correctly would have in the first place.

To identify your Kohler paver, turn one over. Most Kohler exterior pavers carry a molded code on the underside or along an unexposed edge. That code, plus a measurement of the paver’s thickness in millimeters, gets us to the right match without guesswork. If the pavers are older and the code has worn away, we measure length, width, and thickness on site and match against Kohler’s current production tolerances. Kohler has adjusted manufacturing over the years, so a paver manufactured in 2018 may not calendar-match a 2025 production run, even within the same named line. We tell families this before we order, not after the pallet arrives.

For OEM versus aftermarket: on a driveway that faces full Ventura sun and salt air near the coast, we usually recommend Kohler OEM pavers for repairs where the rest of the field is healthy. The color calibration and edge profile are more predictable. On a full replacement where the entire driveway is coming out anyway, a quality aftermarket paver can do the job well and often at a better per-square-foot number. Graham Stein walks through both options on a written scope before any material is ordered.

Signs Your Kohler Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers are sinking in a defined area. This usually means the base aggregate has eroded or was never compacted to the right depth. In Ventura, rain moves fine soil into the base layer over time, and the pavers follow it down.
  • A crack runs through multiple pavers in a straight line. That’s a structural tell, not a material defect. It often traces a seam where two base pours met, or where a tree root has grown under the bed. The pavers are breaking because the ground under them is moving.
  • Sand is washing out of the joints after every rain. The joint sand is the paver system’s glue. When it goes, the pavers start rubbing against each other and chipping at the edges. Left alone, this turns a $400 joint re-sand into a much larger section repair.
  • Water pools against the garage door or foundation. A paver driveway should slope away from the house. If it doesn’t, the base has settled unevenly. In Ventura’s rainy winters, that standing water works into the base and accelerates the failure.
  • The edges are spreading or dropping at the curb line. Without a solid edge restraint, pavers drift. We see this most often where a driveway meets the street and the original restraint wasn’t pinned deeply enough.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled hall bathroom with patterned floor tile and painted walls

For a full paver driveway replacement in Ventura, expect $7,000 to $18,000 installed. That range covers demolition and removal of the old surface, re-grading and compaction of the base, new edge restraints, the pavers themselves, joint sand, and a final compaction pass. A partial repair, where we cut out and replace a failed section of a healthy driveway, usually lands between $1,500 and $4,500 depending on the square footage and whether the base needs rebuilding.

What drives the number: access to the site, whether the old driveway is concrete or pavers, how much base material has to be hauled out, and the paver line selected. A larger-format Kohler paver costs more per square foot than the standard modular line but goes in faster. We put all of this on paper as a written price before any work starts. No allowances that drift upward, no “we’ll see how it goes once we open it up.” If we uncover a problem, we stop and put the new number in writing before we move forward.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can reasonably re-sand paver joints, pull a single chipped paver and reset it on fresh bedding sand, or clean and reseal the surface. Those are manageable Saturday jobs with the right materials. What goes wrong is when the failure is in the base, and the homeowner doesn’t know it yet. We’ve been called to Ventura driveways where a household spent two weekends lifting and resetting pavers that sank again within a month, because the base underneath had turned to mud. Now they’re paying for the repair twice: once in their own time, once in ours.

If more than a few pavers are moving, if water is pooling against the house, or if you can see the edges spreading, call us at (341) 218-4316. We’ll come out, look at the base, and tell you honestly whether it’s a paver problem or a base problem. The estimate is free. The honesty is standard.
