PGT Bathroom Remodeling: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

If you’re searching for PGT bathroom remodeling in Ventura, you’re likely holding a quote from another contractor, staring at a bathroom that’s seen better decades, or trying to figure out whether your PGT window or door needs to come out before the shower pan goes in. A full bathroom remodel in Ventura with PGT products typically runs $9,000 – $28,000, depending on whether you’re replacing a PGT window in the shower wall, gutting the room to the studs, or something in between. We carry and install PGT-compatible frames, trims, and glazing, and we match them to your existing series so the new work doesn’t look like an afterthought.

Call (341) 218-4316

Here’s how most Ventura homeowners find us: they’ve lived with a bathroom that works but doesn’t work well for years, then one morning the PGT window over the tub is fogged between the panes or weeping at the sill, and suddenly the whole room needs a decision. Or they’re planning a walk-in shower and realize the existing PGT window sits exactly where the new tile needs to end. Either way, the question isn’t really about the window. It’s whether the remodel can happen around it, or whether the window has to come out first.

We’ve handled both. The answer depends on your PGT series, the age of the glazing, and how far the remodel reaches into the wall cavity. What we won’t do is guess at it. We’ll put the scope in writing before the first board moves, so you know whether you’re looking at a $9,000 refresh or a $28,000 gut-and-rebuild with new PGT openings.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT manufactures residential windows and doors under several series names, and the compatibility question matters more than most people expect. The original WinGuard line, the Spectrum series, and the newer EnergyVue and ClassicVue lines all use different frame profiles and glazing packages. A replacement sash from one series will not sit cleanly in another, even if the rough opening is the same size. If your home in Ventura’s Midtown or College area has PGT windows from the early 2000s, you’re probably looking at WinGuard frames; homes built or renovated after 2015 often have EnergyVue or Spectrum instead.

The fastest way to identify what you have is to look for the etched label in the corner of the glass or the printed sticker on the frame channel. The series code is there, along with the glass package, which matters a lot in Ventura. Coastal homes within a few blocks of the water need laminated or impact-rated glazing to hold up against salt air and the marine layer; inland homes near the hills get more sun load and benefit from low-E coatings that don’t fight the HVAC system.

One compatibility gotcha we see regularly: PGT windows in older bathrooms are often smaller than today’s code-minimum egress or ventilation requirements. If your remodel involves moving the shower or changing the room’s layout, the existing opening may not pass inspection as-is. We’ll tell you that before you fall in love with a tile layout. The decision between OEM PGT parts and quality aftermarket equivalents usually comes down to the glass package, not the frame. For obscure or off-angle glazing, OEM is the safest route; for standard lites and screens, we can often source aftermarket at 20 – 30% less without losing fit or finish.

Elmstead Remodeling Ventura is an independent contractor, not a PGT dealer or affiliate. We work with PGT products because Ventura homeowners ask for them by name, but we’re free to tell you when a different brand or glazing package would serve the room better.

Signs Your PGT Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Fog between the glass panes. This means the seal has failed and the inert gas between the lites has escaped. No amount of cleaning fixes it. The insulated glass unit, or IGU, needs replacement, and in a bathroom, the moisture load makes it fail faster than anywhere else in the house.
  • Water staining or soft drywall below the window sill. In a Ventura bathroom, condensation runs down the glass and pools at the sill. If the weep holes are blocked or the flashing was never right, that water gets into the wall cavity. By the time you see the stain, the sill plate and possibly the studs have been wet for months.
  • Black mold at the frame corners or along the caulk line. Bathrooms hold humidity that windows in other rooms never see. Mold at the frame joint usually means the seal between the window and the rough opening has broken down. Surface cleaning helps for a few weeks; the fix is removing the trim, replacing the sealant, and often the surrounding drywall.
  • The window won’t stay open or closed. PGT windows in bathrooms carry extra weight from glazing and humidity-swollen wood trim. Worn balancers, bent tracks, or corroded hardware from salt air near the coast will make operation stiff or sloppy. It’s a mechanical fix, not a glazing fix, but it’s often the first thing to fail.
  • Visible gaps or daylight at the frame edge. If you can see light through the gap between the window frame and the wall, the installation has shifted. In Ventura’s clay-heavy soil, minor settling is common, but a visible gap means the flashing and sealant have pulled away. Water is getting in.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

The installed price for PGT bathroom remodeling in Ventura depends on what the project actually involves. If you’re replacing a PGT window within an existing bathroom remodel, the window portion typically adds $800 – $3,000 to the project, depending on size, glazing package, and whether the rough opening needs modification. A full bathroom remodel that includes a PGT window replacement and tiling work runs $9,000 – $28,000. A smaller bathroom refresh with a window swap and minor fixture updates lands around $5,000 – $12,000.

Here’s the line-by-line for a typical PGT bathroom window replacement within a remodel:

  • PGT replacement window unit (36″ x 36″, EnergyVue or Spectrum): $500 – $1,600
  • Glazing upgrade (impact-rated or low-E, coastal package): $200 – $700
  • Rough opening modification or repair (if needed): $400 – $1,200
  • Re-flashing, sealant, and trim (Schluter trim profiles for wet areas): $150 – $500
  • Labor, drop cloths, clean-up: included in the written price

What drives the price up is the wall cavity. Once the tile comes off and the old window comes out, we often find water damage around the rough opening, especially in Ventura homes built before the 1990s. Rot repair, new flashing, and sometimes reframing a portion of the wall are common. What drives the price down is a simple sash or IGU replacement, or a bathroom remodel that works with the existing rough opening instead of changing it.

Every project gets a written price before any work starts. That number covers the PGT product, the labor, the drop cloths, the shoe covers, and the clean-up. If the job runs into something we didn’t expect, we stop and talk to you before anything changes. The written price is the price.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check on your own. Look at the label on the glass or frame to identify your PGT series. Measure the rough opening if you’re just gathering information. Check the weep holes at the bottom of the frame and clear them if they’re clogged. Look for visible gaps around the trim. That’s about it.

Replacing a bathroom window is not a weekend project. The opening is surrounded by tile, drywall, waterproofing membrane, and usually the tub or shower surround. Removing a PGT window without damaging the waterproofing is precision work. One wrong cut into a Schluter membrane or one missed flashing detail, and the first shower after the “fix” sends water into the wall cavity. By the time you see it, the damage is done. We’ve also seen homeowners order a replacement window based on the old frame size, only to find the new unit doesn’t seat properly because the original installation wasn’t square. Getting the measurements wrong on the ordering end costs more than the install.

If you’re not sure whether your PGT window can stay in place during a remodel or needs to come out, call (341) 218-4316. We’ll look at it, tell you what’s possible, and put the plan in writing before the first board moves.
