Techo-Bloc Home Additions & ADU: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a home addition or ADU in Ventura with Techo-Bloc hardscape products as part of the exterior scope, a full build typically runs $45,000 – $130,000 installed, and for ADUs specifically, we see most Ventura projects land between $90,000 and $220,000 depending on foundation work, utility runs, and finish level. We stock and install Techo-Bloc-compatible materials for the paver, wall, and step components of these projects, and can typically have materials on-site within days of a signed scope, not weeks.
Most Ventura owners reach out when they’re holding a set of plans that specify Techo-Bloc products and need a contractor who actually knows how those blocks, caps, and pavers behave on coastal clay soil with our drainage patterns. Or they’ve had a previous contractor price the addition and the hardscape separately, leaving gaps in the written scope. That’s usually where the confusion starts, and it’s the first thing we sort out.
Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

Techo-Bloc makes distinct product lines, and they are not interchangeable the way generic pavers are. For Ventura additions and ADUs, the common series we work with are the Blu 60 and Blu 80 slabs for smooth-surface patios and walk-ups, Para and Mista pavers for driveways and entry courts, and Raffinato or Semma wall blocks for planter walls, seat walls, and step risers adjacent to the structure. The compatibility gotcha: Blu 60 is a 60mm-thick paver rated for pedestrian loads only. Put it under a car and it will crack within a season or two. Blu 80 is the 80mm version rated for vehicular use. We’ve seen Ventura driveways spec’d with 60mm pavers because the product photos look identical, and it fails the first time a contractor parks a loaded truck on it.
Identifying your exact part is straightforward if you can access the original invoice or the cut sheet from your designer. Techo-Bloc stamps a product code on the pallet wrap and on the underside of most units. If you don’t have paperwork, measure the unit: length, width, and thickness in millimeters. That triple measurement gets us to the right series faster than any color name, because Techo-Bloc changes color names (Onda Grey, Champlain Grey, Shale Grey) across regions and years. For OEM versus aftermarket: there is no true aftermarket equivalent for Techo-Bloc’s textured faces and color blends. The paver you buy from a big-box store as a “match” will be off in both dimension and surface texture, and it will telegraph the repair every time the afternoon light hits it.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Home Addition or ADU Hardscape Is Failing
- Pavers rocking or shifting underfoot near the addition’s exterior door. This usually means the base layer was compacted in lifts that were too thick, or a downspout from the new roof is discharging directly onto the paver edge. In Ventura, we see this most on the north side of additions where the soil stays damp longer.
- Wall blocks separating at the corners of planter walls or seat walls. Techo-Bloc wall units use a tongue-and-groove or lipped edge, and when they split apart, it’s almost always a drainage issue behind the wall. Water builds up, the soil expands, and the wall gets pushed outward from the back.
- Pavers sinking in a line from the ADU foundation to the street. That line is usually the utility trench from the ADU’s water, sewer, or electrical run. If the trench wasn’t compacted in proper lifts before the pavers went back down, the trench settles and takes the pavers with it.
- Efflorescence, that white chalky film, on the pavers near where concrete meets Techo-Bloc. This is minerals from the concrete slab wicking through the paver. It’s cosmetic, but it tells you water is moving through the paver bed toward the lowest point, which will eventually undermine the base.
- A step or landing that slopes toward the house instead of away. Techo-Bloc steps need a positive slope of about 1/8 inch per foot to shed water. When a step settles the wrong way, it channels water into the foundation wall of the addition, and that’s the start of a much more expensive repair.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For the Techo-Bloc components of a Ventura home addition or ADU, installed pricing varies by area and depth of the failure. A corrective paver repair around a new ADU, including removing the affected area, recompacting the base, and reinstalling with proper edge restraint, typically runs $3,500 – $11,000 when it’s part of a larger project scope. A full paver driveway or entry court replacement falls between $7,000 and $18,000. If wall blocks and caps need to come down and be rebuilt, expect to add $40 – $75 per square foot of wall face depending on access and whether the drainage gravel behind the wall needs to be replaced.
Every quote from Elmstead Remodeling Ventura includes the written price before any work starts. That price names the exact Techo-Bloc series and color, the volume of material, the labor to remove and reinstall, the base material, and the final clean-up protocol. It does not grow after the crew arrives unless you add scope, and if you do, we price that addition in writing before it begins. The workmanship carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which stays with the project for a full year after completion.
DIY or Call Us?
For hardscape adjacent to a home addition or ADU, the honest answer is that there’s very little here that’s safe to do as a full DIY. You can mark the edges of the failing area with chalk, take photos on a dry day after a rain, and check your downspouts to see if any discharge is hitting the paver area. That documentation helps us price accurately before we come out. What we don’t recommend: pulling up pavers yourself and putting them back on un-compacted soil. The base under a Techo-Bloc installation is a structural layer, and if you don’t know what’s under the surface, you’ll be redoing it in a year.
There’s also a safety angle with wall blocks. A seat wall that’s leaning is holding the weight of the soil behind it. We use heavy lifting and proper shoring for removal, and we’ve had blocks shift unexpectedly on past jobs when the soil behind them was saturated. That’s not a job for a weekend. FAQs

Techo-Bloc pavers installed on a properly compacted base with edge restraint will last 20 to 30 years in Ventura’s climate before the surface begins to show meaningful wear. The base fails before the paver does. Coastal salt air doesn’t break down the concrete mixture, but poor drainage and root intrusion from nearby eucalyptus trees will shorten the life of the installation dramatically. Call (341) 218-4316 and we’ll tell you if your failure is a base issue or a drainage issue.
Yes, if the base under that section is still intact and the failure is isolated to surface-level issues like edge restraint failure or a localized low spot, we can repair the affected area without tearing out the full installation. If the base has been undermined by water, the repair is only as good as the sub-base correction. Call (341) 218-4316 for an honest assessment, and we’ll write the repair scope the same day.
Most Techo-Bloc paver repairs or replacements adjacent to an addition take two to five working days, depending on access to the site, the size of the affected area, and whether the base needs to be excavated and rebuilt. We schedule around family rest hours where possible and use quiet tools during nap and school hours. Call (341) 218-4316 and we’ll give you a scheduling window in writing before the job starts.
We order Techo-Bloc products directly for each project from regional distributors who supply Ventura, which means the materials are matched to your existing series and color from the start. You don’t need to source anything yourself, and we won’t substitute a different brand without showing you the written change and the price adjustment first. Call (341) 218-4316 and we’ll walk you through the material list for your project.
