Cover Kitchen Remodeling: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

A full kitchen remodel in Ventura through Elmstead Remodeling typically runs $14,000 to $45,000, depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and how much the existing layout moves. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with the Cover brand, but we stock and install Cover-compatible kitchen components including cabinetry, counters, and fixtures, and we can usually start your project within two to three weeks of finalizing the written scope. Most Ventura families call us when their kitchen has hit that point where one failed element, a warped cabinet door, a cracked counter, a sink that no longer seals, makes the whole room feel done.

What we hear most often is some version of this: the kitchen still works, technically, but the pieces no longer hold up as a system. A drawer face delaminates. The caulk line around the sink turns black. The cabinet box under the sink swells from a slow drip nobody caught for months. One failed part drags the rest down. And once the room is being used hard by kids and pets every single day, the question isn’t whether to fix it, it’s what to fix it with.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover kitchens come in a few distinct cabinet series, and the replacement path is different for each. The base-model flat-panel line uses 1/2-inch side panels with vinyl-wrapped doors, which are economical but will delaminate at the edges within four to seven years in a coastal climate like Ventura’s, where morning marine layer pushes moisture into the kitchen every day. The mid-tier shaker series uses 3/4-inch plywood boxes with painted MDF door fronts, a more stable build that still shows wear at drawer glides and hinge plates first. The upper-tier framed-inset series is genuinely well made, but the soft-close hardware is proprietary, and that’s where we see failures two to one over any other component.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Cover cabinet boxes are generally salvageable even when doors and drawer fronts are not. The boxes on the shaker and inset lines are box-jointed plywood, and we’ve gone into more than one Ventura kitchen where the client assumed everything had to be torn out, but we were able to swap doors, reface the boxes, and save thousands. The flat-panel line is a different story. Once the vinyl wrap peels, the substrate swells, and the box joints loosen. Those are replacement jobs, not refacing jobs.

For countertops on Cover kitchens, the original install is usually a standard quartz or laminate slab with a 3cm overhang. If you’re replacing with Cambria, Silestone, or Caesarstone, the slab thickness matches, so no cabinet modifications are needed. If you’re switching to a heavier natural stone, we’ll need to check the cabinet box load capacity before quoting, because some Cover base cabinets were built to laminate weight tolerance and won’t safely carry 2cm granite without added support.

We also stock compatible components from KraftMaid and Wellborn for cabinet replacement, and Cambria and Silestone for counters. These aren’t Cover-branded parts, but they’re dimensions-matched and carry their own manufacturer warranties, which means you can look up the warranty terms yourself before you sign anything.

Signs Your Cover Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Soft-close drawers slam or bounce instead of gliding. The soft-close mechanism inside the Cover proprietary slide has a plastic damper that fractures after a few years of daily use. Once that damper cracks, the drawer stops catching and the slide begins scoring the cabinet interior.
  • Angled hairline fissures at the corner of the sink cutout. This is stress cracking at the narrowest point in the countertop, and it’s common in Cover kitchens where the original install used a standard undermount clip without additional support brackets. Water gets into the crack, the substrate swells, and the crack spreads.
  • Hinge screws pull out of the cabinet stile and won’t re-tighten. The door was adjusted too many times, or the hinge plate was installed without thread-locking inserts on the MDF stile. Each re-tightening widens the hole until the plate finally won’t hold.
  • Darkening or peeling along the bottom edge of cabinet doors and drawer fronts. This is moisture wicking, and it’s the most common failure we see in Ventura specifically because the marine layer keeps kitchens damp, especially in the Keys and Midtown where older homes have less ventilation.
  • Cabinet box separating at the back panel or floor joint. Usually caused by the sink base taking on water from a drain leak or a failed disposal gasket. By the time you see it, the plywood has been swelling for weeks, and the box needs replacement, not repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

For a Cover kitchen project in Ventura, here’s what we quote.

  • Cabinet door and drawer front replacement (refacing, boxes kept): $4,000 – $13,000 depending on door count and finish.
  • Full cabinet tear-out and new installation: $9,000 – $20,000 for a small kitchen, up to $20,000 – $45,000 for a full reconfiguration.
  • Countertop replacement (quartz or solid surface): $2,000 – $6,500 installed.
  • Backsplash replacement: $800 – $2,500 typical.
  • Kitchen island addition or rebuild: $3,000 – $10,000.

The range depends mostly on two things: whether the cabinet boxes can be saved, and whether you want the electrical and plumbing moved. Moving a sink line or adding outlets changes a reface into a remodel, and the price moves with it. Every quote we give is written, line-itemed, and fixed before work starts, which is how Graham Stein has run Elmstead jobs in Ventura for over a decade. You’ll know the exact number before the first drop cloth goes down, and that number doesn’t change unless you ask us to change the scope. If we finish and something isn’t right, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and fix it.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things on this list are safe for a homeowner. You can tighten exposed hinge screws. You can re-caulk a backsplash seam. You can clean the cabinet box under the sink and check for leaks. These are inspection and maintenance tasks, and if that’s all the kitchen needs, you don’t need us for it.

Where DIY goes wrong is when someone tries to replace cabinet doors themselves, or cuts out a counter section, or attempts a full box removal. Cabinet door alignment is finicky work, and if the hinge plates are off by even an eighth of an inch, every door in the run looks wrong. Countertop removal is genuinely heavy, dangerous work, a 3cm quartz slab can weigh over 300 pounds, and a drop means an injury or a shattered stone. Cabinet box removal requires cutting fasteners and shimming the new box level, and if the floor has settled since the original install, like half the older homes in Ventura, the install needs more than a straight swap.

If the failure is a broken hinge, a cracked drawer damper, or a compromised sink base, we’d rather walk you through what we see on a free estimate than have you discover a bigger problem halfway through. Call (341) 218-4316 and we’ll send Graham or one of his crew to look at it in person.
