James Hardie Fence Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

James Hardie fence installation in Ventura typically runs $3,500 – $9,000 for a full perimeter project using HardiePlank lap siding or HardiePanel vertical siding mounted on a properly engineered frame. That price includes tear-out of the old fence, new posts and framing, the James Hardie material itself, trim, fasteners, and a written line-item quote before any work starts. Most Ventura homeowners discover they need this page after a wind event off the Santa Ana corridor, or after noticing their existing wood fence has started cupping, splitting, or pulling away from the posts in the marine air that rolls through neighborhoods like Midtown and Pierpont.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

For fence applications, the two James Hardie products we work with most in Ventura are HardiePlank lap siding (smooth or Cedarmill texture, 5/16″ thickness, 6-1/4″ or 8-1/4″ exposure) and HardiePanel vertical siding (5/16″ or 7/16″ thickness, smooth or Sierra 8 texture). Both are fiber cement, which means they will not rot, warp, or become termite food the way wood fencing does in Ventura’s coastal humidity. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss: James Hardie fiber cement is a cladding, not a structural panel. You cannot simply nail HardiePanel to a line of 4×4 posts and call it done. The frame behind it carries the wind load, and in Ventura that frame needs to be engineered for the gusts that come off the hills through East Ventura and down toward Saticoy. We build the frame first, then hang the James Hardie material on it with the correct 6d or 8d corrosion-resistant fasteners and the required gap at grade. If you are trying to identify what is already on your fence, look for the James Hardie stamp on the back face of the board or the small barcode sticker on the trimmed edge. Some aftermarket fiber cement boards look close from eight feet away, but the density, thickness, and warranty are not the same. We stock James Hardie product on the truck for most Ventura fence jobs, and if the specific texture or width is not loaded that morning, we order it direct from our Ventura supply yard so it is on site before the crew arrives.

Signs Your James Hardie Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Boards pulling away from the posts or rails: This almost always means the fasteners were not rated for exterior coastal exposure, or they were driven too shallow. In Ventura’s salt-adjacent air, interior-grade nails corrode inside the first two or three years and lose their grip.
  • Waviness or buckling across a fence line: James Hardie boards move with moisture. If the installer butted the boards tight with no expansion gap at the seams, the boards will push against each other and bow. We leave the manufacturer’s specified gap and caulk it with a paintable sealant rated for fiber cement.
  • Bottom edges crumbling or flaking: Boards installed too close to the soil in a Ventura yard with irrigation overspray will wick moisture up the fiber cement and degrade at the edges. Hardie calls for a minimum of 2″ clearance above grade, and more if the sprinkler heads hit the fence line directly.
  • Post rot where the fence meets the ground: Even a James Hardie fence lives and dies by its posts. If the original posts were set in concrete without proper drainage and moisture barriers, the posts fail and the boards above them go crooked. We set posts with gravel at the base and slope the concrete cap so water runs away.
  • Fastener heads popping or rust staining: Rust streaks running down the board face mean the installer used the wrong fastener material. James Hardie spec requires hot-dipped galvanized or stainless nails and screws. Plain electroplated fasteners will bleed rust onto your fence within two Ventura wet seasons.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A whole-home remodel with the living, dining and kitchen areas opened up

In Ventura, a James Hardie fence installation lands between $3,500 and $9,000 for most residential properties. The spread depends on three things: how many linear feet of fence you are building, whether we are pulling out an old fence first, and whether the frame behind the James Hardie material is salvageable or needs to be rebuilt. To be specific:

  • Tear-out and disposal of an old wood or chain-link fence: $400 – $1,200 depending on length and what it is anchored to.
  • New pressure-treated or steel posts, set in concrete with drainage: $800 – $2,500 depending on count and whether we hit hardpan or rock.
  • James Hardie board or panel material, trim, and fasteners: $1,200 – $3,800 depending on linear feet and finish.
  • Labor, permitting if required, and site cleanup: $1,100 – $2,700 depending on access and the condition of the ground.

Every fence quote is written down and handed to you before the first board moves. The price on that page is the price. If we find rot in a post during tear-out and the scope changes, we pause, explain it in person, and put the revised number in writing before we keep going. The finished fence is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something is not done right after the job is complete, we make it right. The James Hardie material itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty, which you can verify directly with James Hardie.

DIY or Call Us?

Fiber cement is not a high-tension spring or an electrical panel, so it is safe for a careful homeowner to handle. What gets people in trouble is the cutting: James Hardie board produces silica dust when cut dry. If you are going to cut it yourself, use a fiber cement shear or a circular saw with a HEPA vacuum attached and a proper respirator. The bigger risk in Ventura is the frame. A fence that fails in a wind storm is not a nuisance, it is a projectile. The horizontal rails, post spacing, and embedment depth have to be right for the wind speeds we actually get in Ventura, not the speeds a generic online tutorial assumes. If you want to check something yourself, look at your current posts: push on them. If they move, the fence is already compromised and no new board will fix that. If you would rather have the whole thing handled, call us at (341) 218-4316 and we will come measure, write the number down, and hand it to you.
